Snake on a Pole

Snake on a Pole

The Bible is filled with stories that deal with mankind’s sin. God required animal sacrifices to represent the taking away of sin. But the strangest ‘sin’ story of all may be the ‘Snake On The Pole’ story. It’s short.

Wandering Israelites grumbled and complained against God. God sent snakes to bite and kill many of them. Moses prayed to God for help. God told Moses to make a bronze snake and put it on a pole. Numbers 21:4-9 So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and LIVE.

About 1450 years later we learn from Jesus Christ that He was the fulfillment of that strange story. He said:

“And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal LIFE.” John 3:15

The snake represented sin. The snake on the pole represented Christ on the cross. Jesus Christ BECAME OUR SIN. 2 Cor. 5:21 Our sin was put to DEATH on the cross. Jesus Christ literally paid for OUR SIN with His own flesh and blood.

Jesus mentioned the ‘snake on the pole’ story just before He uttered the most famous verse in the Bible:

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal LIFE.” John 3:16

When we have faith in the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross paying for our sin we are assured of eternal life with Him. By His stripes we are healed! Isaiah 53:5

Another famous story: The Lamb of God

His older cousin, John the Baptist said: “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.”

On a fateful Friday the 13th an Angel of death killed all the firstborn in Egypt who were not protected by the blood of a lamb. Jesus was God’s sacrificial lamb. Exodus 11:4-6 and Exodus 12

Abraham sacrifices Isaac

The story of Abraham and Isaac is also a picture of Christ. God provided the required sacrifice for sin in Isaac’s place. Genesis 22:1-14

May you joyfully discover that the entire Bible, Old and New Testament, is ALL about Jesus Christ!

Here are some more facts:

♥  Almost 2000 years ago Jesus Christ rose from the grave after three days. He lives now and forever. He freely gives eternal life to all who truly believe in Him.

♥  When Jesus Christ died on the cross OUR SIN DIED on the cross.

♥  Jesus Christ is ‘perfect’. If we are IN Jesus Christ WE are made perfect. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. 2 Corinthians 5:17

♥  We are no longer separated from God. We are, by faith IN Jesus Christ and ‘born again’ into His family forever! John 3:3

‘The wages of sin are death but the FREE GIFT of God is eternal LIFE in Jesus Christ our Lord.’ Romans 6:23

  1. Jesus is not the second Adam, not to me. Jesus is the 2nd Snake, to me.
Just as Moses lifted up the bronze snake on a pole in the wilderness for the Israelites to look at and be healed from the very thing killing them i.e. poisonous snakes, so too those who look upon the sin bearing and lifted up Christ on a cross will live and not die. Those who handle snakes and drink poison will not die, but live. Mark was right. Those who partake of the body(bread) of Christ(the snake on a pole) and drink his blood(snake’s poison) will live and not die. I think it is fine to remind kid’s to look upon the cursed Christ to remind them of the sins he carried for the life of the world. He was wounded for our transgressions.

  3. That’s probably what is being referred to in Mark’s Gospel below.
This text I believe is not in all ancient manuscripts of Mark’s Gospel and could have been pulled out from a Gospel that was not accepted, but the person who wrote it wanted part of their Gospel preserved. Probably just a symbolic way of expressing Jesus as a snake on a pole, and his blood (what we drink) as the snake’s poison, and handling the snake as receiving the body of Christ (we take it as bread). Just a guess. Don’t hold me to it.

    Mark 16:17–18

17 And and these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

  6. Phiency Roy says:

I am glad to tell you all about my discovery of a true christian faith in my life. I am a Christian Researcher, Evangelist and active member of the Catholic Church. I have been incorporated in the Catholic Church since 1995 after I have left the Presbyterian Church one of the denominations of the Protestant Church. According to my study of the Holy Bible and research of the Catholic Faith, it was found that there is one God only, the Lord Jesus Christ and one Divine Religion, the Catholic Church.
My new study and research reveal that the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit mean and stand for the Lord Jesus Christ alone. So, the Lord Jesus Christ is the same God of both Old and New Testaments of the Holy Bible. I have written a book titled GOD IS ONE as a mark of my successful study and research and my greatest achievement in life. I keep the book in the website for public information and for global evangelization. I believe the book will be one of the best theological books for discovery proper divine realization. Please check my theological orientation and approach to New Age Theology, just click to have a copy of the book for details.

  8. LeRoy Pina says:

I am a sinner!! That is the cold hard truth,God did not make me to be a sinner but to be made right with God through my faith in Jesus Christ who is my lord and Savior. Anything else is a lie and a sin!!!!
I know that I have been truly faithful to God by the way I have lived my life and that makes me sad but by becoming stronger in my faith I know (believe) that Jesus has and will always forgive my sins and lack of faith and that make me joyful. I don’t deserve the gift of His forgiveness but I believe His love for me is more than enough to save me. If we all strive to live in faith and trust Jesus(God)in our hearts all will be well for us and we WILL LIVE with HIM in Heaven forever!!! AMEN

      Hello Mbewe,

Go ahead and re-read the story first. Numbers 21:4-9

Then remember that Jesus Christ said this: “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal LIFE.” John 3:15

The whole strange story was about Him. He had to be raised on a pole. He had to be crucified and die as payment for the sins of the world.

All one must do is look to Him in faith and he will have eternal life.

It is so easy my friend. Yet so profound.

If you have more questions email

      Blessings to you brother!

      • Scott, I appreciate the mettisenns. There are a number of pastors (and others, of course) making a very strong case for the sin of idolatry being the primary sin under-girding just about every other sin which we commit. Essentially, we commit idolatry whenever we put anything before God or worship anything else as God instead of the true God of the Bible. Very thought provoking stuff. One book (which I’m yet to read but is on my shelf) is by Tim Keller called Counterfeit Gods , but I’m sure there are others as well.

  23. If jesus is god or apart of god such as a branch to a maple tree. Then god died for our sins?

    • mark hutchinson says:

God cannot die for our sins!!He can only condemn them. That’s why Jesus Christ had to become true humanity.Perfect humanity.Born of a virgin, conceived by God the Holy Spirit. He had no sin nature, had no personal sin& had no Adam’s sin.Latter being our reason for spiritual death @ physical birth.Condemnation must precede salvation. All God’s Grace. In fact God’s policy for mankind period. What’s grace? On the basis of everything Jesus Christ accomplished on the Cross God is free to do for man what He ordained in eternity past.Under the doctrinal truth of the Divine Decree.Jesus is the only savior of mankind. He’s the only way to God The Father We are mandated to believe in Jesus Christ &not only Christ but He who sent Him (God the Father)He Jesus Christ was perfect in every way.Not only that He totally fulfilled everything demanded by God the Father We could’t meet any of the demands dictated by His Absolute Perfection&Integrity
Jesus is both truly God&true perfect humanity. The only person to qualify from physical birth. Not only that but the 33yrs He was on earth.Including the 6 hours on the cross. The last3hrs where all the sins of mankind were slammed on Christ’s powerful & perfect body & judged. Then He Himself gave up His own human life and only after all the sins had been judged when He died spiritually as our only Substitute for ouins Christ’s Substitutionary Spiritual Death is the basis of our so great salvation.

      • mark hutchinson says:

This is why a person can only express faith alone in Christ alone for salvation. If God The Father accepted us on the basis of our strength our noble acts our own human good towards our fellow man etc……then God would compromise His Absolute Integrity(Absolute Righteousness&His Justice)Along with His Absolute Love,of which functions with His Integrity never by itself. The 3 work in harmony with each other never exclusivelyAnything God does for mankind is done in Grace We neither deserve or work for it Remember God is free to do anything He so desires because of who &What Christ is & what He accomplished on the Cross & it is all done in Grace We were born spiritually dead @ physical birth totally helpless & hopeless to save ourselves totally cut off &out of a meaningful relationship with our Creator/savior God .Realise &remember Adam & Eve were our facsimile parents When Adam sinned we in effect sinned hence condition @ physical birth totally out of any meaningful relationship with The God of the Universe & in a very sensitive condition so without compromising Himself & His Absolute Integrity His Love found the way of Deliverance from the PIT of hell & place us back in fellowship& a beautiful relational for all eternity & l am so without relieved He did The sad thing in all this is EEVERYONE in human history is potentially saved For it to become reality in one’s own personal life is for them to express faith alone in Christ alone & trust in His unique work of substitutionary spiritual death on our behalf PERIOD!!! Anything other than that cancels salvation for that person or people

I just want to say is god give us a wonderful gift by creating us…
    -Thank you god-

    • We r created in image of God and our body is a temple of God!!

    • I want to finish my tohhgut here. If God treated us fairly Jesus would have never died on the cross. and we would have never been offered salvation. I praise God that He loves me, He never fails me and He goes to plan B and on. Look ho w He blessed Israel, they sinned and went away from God countless times, but He was faithful and loved them any way. Romans 5:8 But God commended His love toward us, in that while we were sinners Christ died for us. Praise be to God!

      • Yes, Right! God’s love is beyond our imagination. His love is greater than our sins, weaknesses, problems etc. Thank you Jesus for dying for me and ever ready to forgive me when I ask pardon. My heart rejoices when I realize what a wonderful God we have. The God of the universe. The one and only holy Trinity God. I Love You my Saviour, my Hero, my King my Everything. THANK YOU. THIS IS FOR YOU.

Wonderful presentation of God`s love for mankind

    • so jesus christ died so that all sins of all humans past or present be nipped in the bud. He was the son of God . Was Moses also the son of God was Noah the same if not who they were since Moses died before Christ he carries his sins and so his folowers. Where does Christ reside now in the grave or keeps hanging, why was he hanged, can God be hanged. First it was Holy Mary now it is Mary Magdalene. Is communication gap correct if not why 12 testaments. Is 3000 years not a sufficient time which necessitated the creation of 12 testaments.
Kindly clarify since I simply want to know the truth.
      With sincere regards

His death paid for the sins of those who trust in Him.
Jesus Christ’s paid for the sins of all those who truly love God. Regardless of when they lived on earth.
Christ is at the right hand of God the Father.
The two Marys were both sinners in need of a Savior, just like us.
Not sure of your last statements.

        Blessing to you friend.

        • Hi Mahmood, nice that you are trying to clarify your doubts. I’ll try to help you as much as I can.

First of all there is a vast difference between Jesus and all the prophets and saints that ever lived on earth even if they died for faith and preaching coz simply dying for someone or all you don’t become God. Why ?

          1) I believe as Bible says that Jesus was born out of Virgin Mary. The first sign of HIM being God as He’s born by power.

          2) The countless impossible miracles performed by HIM. (RECORD BREAKING MIRACLES) not once, not twice but as many times as people needed. It was like a Child’s play to HIM. Do you know somebody like HIM who has done so without any difficulty. Bible says what he said at the time when people questioned HIM “who is HE to forgive sins? What did Jesus say : Which is easier to say your sins are forgiven or get up and walk to crippled man who was bed ridden for very many years I think I can also say that “your sins are forgiven” as stupid as I am but my dear I have to prove what I am saying. JESUS proved it. Please read Bible Luke Ch 5 vs 17-26.

          3) You must be knowing the phrase :- A blind cannot lead another blind. You need to be without sin to forgive other’s sin. Christ was sinless, spotless etc. because as far as I know upto this day the Researchers have failed to find any sin in HIM. I am 110% sure you will fail as well. So he’s our Saviour for HE has taken away our sins by sacrificing himself who was sinless. I know you will understand this.

3)Where does He resides – Want to know ?
          i. Ask all those people who have received healing from HIM. Cancer patients getting healed. Lame walking, Blind seeing, Depressed people getting hope. Miracles after miracles are still taking place in just a mention of HIS name. HE IS ALIVE.

ii. As for you ………. just call unto HIM from your heart and He will tell where he is.

          4. Your question about Mother Mary and Mary Magdalene is not clear. Anyway just to help you out Mother Mary the chosen beautiful, humble Lady to help God fulfill HIS mission. We honor her just as we honor our earthly mother. Just as we love and pray to Jesus so does she. We believe in Holy Trinity God. God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Where Mary Magdalene is concerned please don’t be confused as she was a sinner who received God’s forgiveness and became a sincere disciple of our Lord.

I can go on my dear but I don’t think you will read. BUT LET ME TELL YOU ONE THING THAT ………..”IT IS NOT YOU WHO IS IN SEARCH OF TRUTH BUT THE TRUTH IS IN SEARCH OF YOU.

          God bless.

I love my God. I love my Lord Jesus Christ. I get emotional when I think of what he sacrifised for us all. I have strong faith in my heart. My family dont believe but I feel him in me.
